We formed Lang Energy Solutions to participate in the Home Performance with Energy Star Program (HPwES). To participate in the HPwES program the company must be accredited by and the employees certified by the Building Performance institution (BPI).

BPI has a series of standards and procedures for testing homes and apartments. This is what we call a Home Energy Audit.

While the energy audit does what it implies, we also spend as much time doing health and safety testing of the home. Part of an energy audit is checking all the gas lines for leaks, check the home and all appliances for carbon monoxide, as well as general observation for mold, asbestos or any other issue observed. We also verify that all heating and water heating appliances are venting properly and any conditions that may arise in the home.

After all that is done a blower door is installed and the house is depressurized, by doing this we are able to measure air leaking into the house. It helps us come up with solutions to save on the energy use of the house.

Once the audit is done, the auditor takes his observation and readings back to the office, and puts it all in a modeling software. He can then input proposed changes and see what the most cost effective solutions for the home are.  A scope of work is written, and options put together, and then presented to the homeowner.

The homeowner then decides what, if any improvements they want.

The scope of work may include new doors, new windows, insulation upgrades, and Heating & Cooling system upgrades.

HPwES, using funds from NYSERDA, (New York State Energy and Research Development Authority) can offer low interest financing, 10% cash back or based on income, may help pay for improvements.
